Christmas is coming!
This week we have been doing some last minute practice for our Christmas play and look forward to seeing you all there on Wednesday to watch us!
In Literacy we have been looking at descriptive writing. We looked at using exciting words in our writing. We read the story of the Gruffalo and thought about the character of the Gruffalo by singing the Gruffalo song. We wrote a description of both the Gruffalo and the mouse, thinking carefully about how we could describe both how the character looked but also how the character acted towards others.
In Numeracy we have been doing some Data Handling. We learnt how to create and use a tally chart and a bar chart. We used our bar chart to find out some information.
We are looking forward to a busy week next week!

Christmas
2S have been practicing our Christmas play. The Christmas play is about a school and 2 inspectors come to inspect the school. At the end the inspectors give an award to the school for the neatest school. We worked hard because we had to remember our lines. Our teacher told us what to wear. We had fun!
2m have been reading The Smartest Giant In Town. After we read the book we pretended to be the giant and wrote a diary entry, here is one of them :
Dear Diary,
I woke up this morning and got dressed. I had breakfast and went out for walk I looked at my gown, it was very dirty. So I bought new clothes. Then I bumped into a giraffe! The giraffe's neck was so cold so I gave my new tie. I went to a lake then I saw a goat.
The was very wet so I gave him my new shirt. I went to a camp site a fox then he wanted to be warm so I gave him my new socks. Then I saw a mouse, her house was burnt so I gave her a shoe. Finally I saw a dog, he was near a puddle. I then gave him a belt so he could get past the puddle. I had no clothes left I then saw my old clothes so I put them on.

Anti-Bullying Week
This week we have been looking more closely at what bullying is and how we would like people to treat us and how people shouldn't treat us. We learnt that we should treat other people how we would liked to be treated ourselves. We also created Anti-bullying posters thinking carefully about the features of a poster - colourful, attractive, eye-catching etc.
In Numeracy we have been looking at Shapes. We looked at some different 2D and 3D shapes and their properties. We also looked at symmetry and repeating patterns. We all enjoyed dressing up in our pyjamas today for Children in Need.
We have been continuing to practice our play as the day of the performance comes closer! Thank-you to those of you who have already brought in costumes, if you have not yet please do so as soon as possible.
Have a good weekend,

Writing a diary
Class 2M also looked at numberlines this week. Some of us even started to use a blank numberline to help us with our additions but we are going to be doing lots more work on using these in the future.
In Literacy we continued to look at the story of the snail and the whale, in particular looking at features of diary writing. We wrote two diary entries, one as the snail and one as one of the children who saw the whale on the beach. We learnt that when we are writing a diary entry we need to pretend that we are the character and that we are writing about things that happened in the past.
Next week is a busy week as it is Anti-bullying week and Children in need day on Friday. On Thursday for Anti-bullying week children are invited to wear something blue and on Friday for Children in need, invited to come to school in their pyjamas with a small donation. Please don't forget our bake and take and best dressed teddy bear competition too. In amongst all that we will also be practicing our Christmas play!

Blank Number Lines
In year 2 we talked about blank number lines. A blank number line is a line without any numbers. We had to place the numbers on the line. We had to do sums without numbers on the blank number line. Everyone had to skip the numbers on the line to find out the answer.
We worked together to check our answer. Everybody had fun and had a good time.

The Snail and the Whale
This week we have been looking at the book The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson. We learnt about what a setting was and what a caption was and created our own settings and captions for the story. We also wrote the story in our own words remembering what features we needed to use. In Numeracy we have been learning about doubles, near doubles and number facts. We thought about which method we needed to work out which sum. We have also been working on how to solve word problems.
This week we started practising our Christmas play and are all excited about our parts. Children who have speaking parts have taken a script home to learn their words. Please could this script be kept in their bookbags as we will be using them most days. You should also have received a letter with costume details. Homework for Numeracy and Literacy has also been sent home this week and is due Wednesday.
I am out on a course on Monday so 2M will be covered by Mrs Quinn.
Have a good weekend, enjoy learning your lines!

Multi-cultural week
We've had another great week with Multi-cultural week. Year 2 were the continent of Asia. We enjoyed learning lots about Asia. Mrs Robinson told us about her trip to the continent and even brought in a puppet from her travels for us to see. We looked at where Asia was on the map and some of the countries which make it up. Today in P.E we enjoyed playing some different playground games which children play in India. Some of us even decided to try them at playtime for ourselves. We enjoyed dressing up in our traditional dress for the carnival today and showing everyone the banner that we made.
We also started practising the songs for our Christmas play and looking at the script. More news on this after half term!
We promised to practice our times tables over the half term to get even better at them!
I hope you have a great half term and see you back feeling refreshed on Monday 2nd November.

Science Week
We had great fun this week, exploring everything 'Sciencey!'
On Monday morning Mr. Merchant told us about the Athletics competition which him and Mr Nicholson were entering. We had to think about who would do better at the high jump. Some of us thought that Mr Nicholson would do better because he was taller. This led us to think about our first experiment of the week - Do taller people jump higher? Please take a look at the powerpoint below to find out the result!
Our second experiment of the week was also about height but this time we had to think about whether taller people had bigger feet. After making some predictions, thinking about how we could find out and recording our results we discovered that taller people do not always have bigger feet!
We are all looking forward to Multi-cultural week next week. Year 2 will be learning all about the continent of Asia. A reminder about the Multi-cultural food evening on Thursday and our whole school carnival on Friday. Hope to see you all there. Another exciting week for us all!

Six Dinner Sid
This week we have been reading the book Six Dinner Sid. The book is about a cat called Sid who has dinner at six different houses. We wrote our own stories based on Six Dinner Sid with many interesting titles including Seven Dinner Samah and Five Dinner Fred. We learnt about what a 'blurb' was and wrote our own blurbs for our stories.
In numeracy we have been learning about 'partitioning' numbers and thinking about how we can use partitioning to add two-digit numbers together.
In Art we looked at some Tudor houses which were around at the time of the Great Fire of London and drew them. Our work was so good that we went to show it to Mrs Leverton and she was really impressed.
We are all looking forward to Science week next week - we are going to be thinking about these two questions;
1) Can taller people jump higher?
2) Does your height effect your shoe size?
We will let you know what we have found out next week!
The sound homework for this week is 'ee' as in meet. Remember to keep working on your Great Fire of London projects. Well done to people who have already brought them in. They are looking great!

Salt dough and Space!
This week we used our designs from last week to make bread from salt-dough. We had some excellent designs - well done! We also carried on working on the story of Beegu and wrote our own space stories - some really good ideas - what great imaginations you all have! In Numeracy we have been learning about measuring in particular capacity and mass. In Science, we have been continuing our work on Electricity. On Friday we had to guess the weight of some objects and put them in the right order. Please take a look at the photos above to see the fun we had this week. This week's spelling sound is 'ai' as in 'rain.'

Another busy week in Year 2!
Wow..what a busy week we have had this week! On Monday we started looking at a new book called Beegu. The book is about an alien who lands on earth. We will continue our work on this book next week. In Numeracy we have been learning about different units of measurement and also about how to tell the time to half past and quarter past and are beginning to learn how to tell the time to quarter to. In R.E this week we made designs for our salt dough bread and are all really looking forward to making it next week! In Geography we learnt all about China and wrote a letter to a boy in China asking him about life there.
This week we learnt the sound 'th' and next week we will be learning the sound 'ng'. The spelling homework that went out today is for the sound 'ng.'
We hope you are getting on OK with your projects. If you need any help just let us know.
Have a great weekend, see you all refreshed on Monday.

The Great Fire of London
Thank-you to all those parents who attended our class talk this morning. We hope you found it useful. If you were unable to attend but would like to discuss any information with us please feel free to pop in anytime to see one of the Year 2 team.
This week we learnt about the Great Fire of London which we all found really interesting. We listened to a story about how the fire started and how a man called Samuel Pepys kept a diary of events of the fire. In Numeracy, we have been learning how to add and subtract using a hundred square. We also started some work on partitioning which means splitting the number into tens and units. We began to think about how we can use partitioning to add two numbers together.
In Literacy, we looked at how we can use full stops and capital letters in our writing and connectives to make our sentences more interesting by adding extra information.
This week we learnt the sound 'sh'. Next week we will be learning the sound 'th'
Information about the Great Fire of London homework project will be put up on the blog shortly. The curriculum overview will also be up on the website soon under the Autumn term part. Please ask us if you need any clarification with any homework.

The Dragon Tears
The children in year 2 read the story 'The Dragon Tears'. They have spent time discussing the storyline. It is about a small boy who finds a magic pearl. The pearl multiplies things and makes the boy wealthy. He then swallows the pearl by mistake and he turns into a dragon. At the end he turns back into a small boy. The children decided they didn't like the ending and wrote their own dragon adventures. They have also created their own dragons using 'colour magic' on the computer! Here is a selection of them.
The Broken Pearl
One sun day Chun Li found a pearl next to the river it was pretty. Chun Li had never seen such a beautiful pearl. When he showed his mum she said throw it out it could cause a lot of trouble. Chun Li didn’t want to throw it away. Chung Li we to his bed and sat down. He had an idea. Chun Li put the pearl in his mouth before his mum came. She said have you thrown the pearl away. Chun Li said yes. Chun Li started changing. He had wings. He flew through the window and flew over the pretty mountains. There was big bears they were happy playing together. Chun Li was too cold. Then he flew over the mountains again and to a land. It was so amazing. Chun Li breathed fire out of his big mouth the people saw Chun Li. They were scared because he had big teeth and big green scales. They got big buckets of cold water and threw it on him. Chun Li started to choke. The magic pearl fell out of his mouth and he turned back into a boy again.

All our lessons have been based around this theme and it has been very interesting to learn about Chinese culture. Year 2 have been keeping a diary about all the activities they have been involved in. These will be placed on the blog next week by the pupils, so make sure you read them when they do!
Some of the activities included:
- Learning about the Zodiac story and then performing it in groups
- Making new year cards and lucky money envelopes
- Learning how to count in Chinese
- Making paper fish to bring us good wealth.
Here are some pictures of the pupils during China week.
The pupils are making lucky Chinese envelopes and cards.
These are the lucky fish the pupils made. They worked very hard to make these and they look wonderful. You can see them in the window of our classroom.
Here, the pupils are creating their own synchronised Chinese dance.
Make sure you read our next blog to see the video of our Zodiac story performance!

China Week
We had a very exciting week celebrating Chinese New Year. We have created our own Lucky red envelopes and new year cards. We have been creating our own versions of the chinese zodiac story though drama and photography. The children really enjoyed pretending to be the different animals in the story. Izn made a great Ox! We have also learnt how to write the numbers 1-10 in Chinese. We challenged ourselves and solved sums written in chinese. It was wonderful to see the children working hard to solve the problems. Some of the children even managed to work out how to write all the numbers to 100!!!
The children also learnt to count to 10 on their fingers using only one hand.
On Wednesday afternoon we did some paper crafting. The children created their own wall hangings of fish that they will be able to hang in their homes. We talked about how fish symbolise wealth.
The children had lots of fun cutting, shaping and sticking paper and card and have produced some very colourful designs. The children were really excited about using silver and gold shiny pens!
It was a wonderful day and the children all worked very hard producing great work and lots of mess!!!
We are looking forward to the rest of the week where we will be doing some Chinese folk dancing, creating our own fortune cookie captions and building our own Great Wall of China.
